Shooting Bluescreen on HD
In the early days of HD most post houses either didn’t know how to get a good key form HD or didn’t want to know.
Post houses with a significant investment in telecine machines were not at all keen on making HD look good.
A decade on and digital capture is well accepted. Of course the cameras haven’t changed that much but the vested interest have. Star Wars Attack of the Clones was shot on HDCAM.
These shots were captured on HDCAM with a cinestyle zoom lens. They were composited in Denmark at Hokus Bogus because basically no one in Soho was interested in supporting HDCAM in the early days. Hokus Bogus had a track record of grading and tweaking video for the big screen because many local movies were shot on digital betacam and transferred to film.
Today we can shoot with 10 bit recording and 4:2:2 or 4:4:4 which enables a cleaner key.
